  • The restoration of Fort Ingall’s palisade will have a direct and lasting impact on the community. By ensuring the preservation of this iconic site, the project will help maintain an accessible, educational, and vibrant space at the heart of Témiscouata’s identity. The Fort will continue to host cultural activities, historical reenactments, school visits, and outreach initiatives that foster a sense of ownership of heritage among all audiences.

This project brings together several local partners, including municipal, tourism, cultural, and educational stakeholders, as well as artisans, businesses, employees, and volunteers from the region. The restoration of the palisade will make a tangible contribution to the local economy by supporting employment, utilizing local resources, and increasing tourist traffic in Témiscouata.

As part of an approach focused on sustainable preservation and the transmission of knowledge, this Beau Sauvetage initiative protects a significant site, highlights local history, and ensures its vitality for future generations.
  • Fort Ingall, located in Cabano (Témiscouata, Quebec), was built in 1839 during the border conflict between Lower Canada and Maine, known as the Aroostook War. Occupied by British troops until 1842, it is a rare example of a temporary military camp erected to assert a strategic presence in the region. Abandoned shortly after the signing of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, the site has retained significant archaeological value.

Excavations conducted in the late 1960s documented its layout and guided its reconstruction in the 1970s, faithful to historical and archaeological knowledge. Today, Fort Ingall is recognized as the only reconstructed military field camp in Quebec and an exceptional testament to regional history. Originally designed for a lifespan of 5 to 10 years, these camps have far exceeded their expected longevity, making the restoration of their components—including the palisade—particularly urgent today.

The project aims to repair this palisade using methods that respect period techniques, in order to ensure the authenticity and sustainability of the site.
